Don’t be Blindsided by a Broken Air Conditioner
A man gave us a call for emergency service because his air conditioner was not working. It was operating fine during the morning but would slowly start to lose its cooling capacity until it stopped working completely by the afternoon. The unit was less than five years old.
When our technician came out to check the unit, he found that a capacitor had failed. He replaced the capacitor and the air conditioner worked normally again.
There are several capacitors in an air conditioning unit that help power various motors in the system. They are located near the compressor, outside fan motor, and inside fan motor. If one fails, its corresponding motor can’t operate. This would result in your air conditioner not working properly, or at all.
Since no one wants to be left without an air conditioner in the summertime, there are some other issues that can go wrong with your unit that you need to be aware of:
Refrigerant leaks: Your air conditioner shouldn’t be low on refrigerant unless it’s leaking or was undercharged at installation. Chances are, you’ll be able to tell if it’s leaking and should call to have it repaired as soon as you notice it.
If you don’t keep up with your annual maintenance, the system will not continue to work as it once did.
If the sensor is knocked out of position, the air conditioner could constantly turn on and off.
That constant on and off could cause the compressor and fan controls to wear out, creating an electrical control failure
The condensate drain could become clogged, especially when it’s humid outside.
