The sewer lines and pipes of your house enable the structure to function safely and smoothly – allowing everyone living within the home to complete simple daily tasks. While, as a homeowner, dealing with a sewer pipeline issue can be both terrifying and overwhelming, it’s important to know that there are cost-effective methods of correcting sewer line issues without having to completely tear up your yard, destroy your property and live without a plumbing system for an extended amount of time.

Save time, money and headaches by learning about trenchless technology and the difference between two common sewer pipe lining methods to identify which solution may work best for you.

Residential Sewer Pipelining: What Is It & Why Is It Necessary?

In the past, if you experienced a sewer pipeline issue, excavating the surrounding area may have been necessary. With today’s modern methods of sewer pipelining, the ways in which sewer pipe problems are approached have changed.

Pipelining can now be a no-dig solution. From cracked to broken to root-infested pipe problems, pipelining enables you to use advanced pipe reconstruction technology to restore the pipe while it is still underground.

This is accomplished by addressing the issue internally, introducing a protective sleeve into the existing pipe to repair the damaged piping and reinforce the cylinders overall structural integrity.
Additionally, this environmentally-friendly approach to your sewer pipe restoration reduces the impact to the surrounding plant and animal life by preventing harmful sewage spills and erosion of exposed soil around your residence. It also ensures that your groundwater and surrounding soil avoid unnecessary contamination.

There are two main approaches to effectively address sewer pipelining that are typically used for residential sewer issues: CIPP and PIP. Understanding the most effective trenchless sewer pipe relining option enables you decide which choice best suits your specific needs.

What is Cured-In-Place (CIPP) Pipelining?
This approach to trenchless pipelining uses a textile liner tube and liquid resin to repair and reseal your cracked or broken sewer pipe from the inside.

  • The process begins with the “wet-out” stage, where the textile liner is infused with the resin mixture (typically an epoxy base with a predetermined hardener).
  • After this is accomplished, the liner is inverted into the existing pipe with air pressure causing the resin to come in contact with the existing internal pipe wall.
  • After the inversion, a calibration tube is inserted into the tube to cure the resin and cause it to solidify against the existing pipe – creating a fitted and corrosion-free new pipe wall.

What is Pull-In-Place (PIP) Pipelining?
A pull-in-place pipelining uses a specially designed felt tube that is saturated with epoxy resin and threaded through the host pipe once the saturation and preparation process is complete.

  • Similar to the CIPP method, PIP pipelining is accomplished by inflating the inserted pipe until it is fully expanded against the interior host pipe wall.
  • Once this is accomplished, the resin must sit and solidify for 12 to 24 hours to allow the mixture to adhere to the existing sewer pipe and create a new enclosure that is as hard as a replacement pipe.
  • This process can be used for entire pipe repair or sectional point repairs, depending on what you need fixed.

Is Relining Clay Sewer Pipe Possible?
Trenchless sewer line repair options like CIPP and PIP can reline various types of existing piping. This effective and noninvasive approach works on clay, metal, iron, PVC, fiberglass, steel, and concrete sewer piping.

Jessie came out today to service our heating system. He was on time and very personable. We have had great experiences with ARCO and Jessie in the past. He got right to work and checked over the system and found that the igniter looked a bit “Iiffy” We had it replaced. Very reasonable. Very Happy with ARCO and will schedule our AC tuneup in the spring..
