As mother nature attempts to move on from winter and roll into spring, your furnace will still play a factor. Depending on those “in-between” days where it feels like the beginning of winter all over again, you may come across some common furnace problems that require heating service. A lot of the time, however, homeowners don’t realize the problems their furnace might be having. A lot of the problems then go unnoticed and your home becomes prone to higher heating costs. An outdated or struggling furnace means more wasted energy, which ultimately hurts your bank account. So, here are some common furnace problems you might encounter as a homeowner and how you can assess the problem immediately so that you can receive help fast!

Especially when the winter months are so inconsistent, it’s important to stay on top of your furnace’s performance in case you need it. ARCO Comfort Air cares about the efficiency of your home which is why we laid out these common furnace problems so you’re fully aware of what to look for.

Furnace Problems That Need Immediate Attention

Faulty pilot lights are one issue that deserves immediate attention. Along with a lot of other mechanical parts that have to do with your furnace, the pilot light could easily malfunction bringing zero heat to your home. There are two types of systems today generally found in furnaces, intermittent pilot light, and hot surface ignition. The hot surface ignition systems use resistance heating which is electronically controlled to light the gas burner. However, if you have an intermittent pilot light, that will also be controlled electronically but uses an electrical spark to ignite the gas pilot light. It will then light the main burners.

Broken Fans and Defective Blowers

Broken fans are another cause for concern when it comes to furnace problems. If the blower turns on and never turns off, there might be a problem with the limit control switch on the furnace fan. You will more likely need to replace the limit control switch if this is the case. If you have a problem with the blower motor, the furnace can turn off and on with too much frequency. Talk about exhausting. If you come across this issue, you can try to oil the lubrication points on the blower motor with lightweight oil. Otherwise, you should call a professional, especially if that quick-fix doesn’t work out.

Poor Electrical Connections

Poor electrical connections are another issue a lot of homeowners deal with that affects their furnace. Throughout time, vibrations that come from running a furnace can loosen internal wiring. This means one wire will become loose, causing a shortage. It can take a good amount of time to find the loose wire, but replacing it will easily fix the issue. Inspect your furnace regularly to avoid this issue.

Clogged Air Filters and Air Leaks in Your Home

Replacing your furnace filter should be a monthly routine. This way, you’re extending the life of your furnace and at the same time avoiding potential furnace problems. It also helps with energy efficiency and saving money on your utility bill. Dirty filters reduce airflow, causing your furnace to work that much harder to generate warm air throughout your home. If you have air leaks in your home as well, your furnace will work a million times harder. It will cost you so much more on your energy bills as well. One tip is to go through your home and seal up any cracks around the windows or doors to ensure that the air in your home stays put.

Damaged Coils and Your Thermostat

Hundreds of tiny little air passages are made up from the coils located inside your furnace. If one of the passages become clogged or restricted in any way, the air flow will be affected, which hurts the efficiency of your furnace. Thermostats obviously play a huge role in how your furnace operates as well. It determines and controls how much and when heat is produced. Problems with your thermostat can lead to the fan forcing no heat, intermittent heat, or no heat at all.

We originally called Acro for one issue but ended up with getting our very out dated breaker boxes replaced which was definitely needed. Shavine M. and Evan S. were both our electric technicians for our full job. Shavine M. was the first technicians on site and was very prompt. The gentlemen let us know before hand the amount of time the power was going to be out and we gave them the space to work. After the work was completed, Shavine gave a walk through of the work completed today and a explaination of the next steps after. We are very happy with the work completed and Shavine and Evan were a pleasure to have as technicians on the job.

Great experience! Quote and installation/service performed same day when others were weeks out just for quote appointment. We had an attic vent fan hooked up and some landscape lighting repaired, but seems they could really do any/all electrical projects you would need.
