Emergency HVAC Plumbing and Electrical Services with Fast Response and Trusted Licensed Professionals

A garbage disposal should make kitchen cleanup easier, not leave you with a sink that will not drain, a unit that only hums or water leaking into the cabinet below. At Arco Home Services, our licensed plumbers repair and replace residential garbage disposals throughout Cleveland Metro and Northeast Ohio, including homes in Bedford Heights, Parma, Akron, Cuyahoga Falls and surrounding communities.

Disposal problems are not all the same. A jammed grinding chamber, failed motor, loose mounting assembly, leaking drain connection or electrical issue can create similar symptoms. We diagnose the unit and the connected sink plumbing before recommending repair or replacement, then provide upfront pricing so you know what the work involves before we begin.

What Causes Garbage Disposal Problems?

Most disposal failures come from a mechanical jam, worn internal components, a leaking connection or an electrical problem. Fibrous food, grease buildup, hard objects and excessive waste can jam or overload the unit. Over time, seals, mounting components and the motor itself can also wear out.

The symptom helps narrow the problem. A disposal that hums but does not spin often points to a jam or seized motor. A completely silent unit may have lost power, tripped its internal overload or developed an electrical failure. Water under the sink can come from the disposal body, sink flange, dishwasher connection or drain piping rather than from the grinding mechanism itself.

  • A jammed grinding chamber or impeller components
  • A tripped internal overload or electrical supply problem
  • A worn or failed motor
  • A leaking sink flange or mounting assembly
  • A loose dishwasher inlet or drain connection
  • Cracked, corroded or leaking disposal housing
  • Drain buildup that makes the sink appear to have a disposal problem

What Are the Signs Your Garbage Disposal Needs Repair?

Call for service when the disposal hums without turning, stops repeatedly, drains slowly, makes grinding or metallic noises, leaks into the cabinet or produces persistent odors that normal cleaning does not resolve. A unit that runs but leaves standing water may have a drain problem downstream rather than a motor problem, so we check the plumbing connected to the disposal as part of the diagnosis.

Do not place a hand inside the disposal to search for an obstruction. If a spoon, glass fragment or another object has entered the chamber, turn the unit off and leave removal to a safe method. Repeatedly resetting or energizing a jammed disposal can overheat the motor.

How Does Our Garbage Disposal Repair Process Work?

We begin by determining whether the problem is mechanical, plumbing-related or electrical. That prevents a functioning disposal from being replaced when the real problem is a clogged drain, loose connection or power issue.

  1. Check the symptom and power status. We confirm whether the unit is silent, humming, leaking, draining poorly or making abnormal noise.
  2. Inspect the sink, mounting assembly and connected plumbing. We look at the flange, drain connections, dishwasher inlet and visible piping for leakage or blockage.
  3. Check for a safe, removable jam. When the unit can be serviced, we clear the obstruction using the appropriate method without reaching into the grinding chamber.
  4. Test the motor and operating condition. If the disposal still does not run correctly, we determine whether the motor or internal assembly has failed.
  5. Repair the serviceable component or recommend replacement. We explain the option and upfront price before work begins.
  6. Run water and test the completed work. We check disposal operation, drainage and visible connections for leakage before we finish.

Should You Repair or Replace a Garbage Disposal?

Repair makes sense when the unit is otherwise in good condition and the problem is limited to a jam, reset issue, drain connection or another serviceable component. Replacement becomes more practical when the motor has failed, the housing itself is leaking, corrosion is advanced or the disposal has become unreliable after repeated problems.

A new disposal also needs to fit the sink, mounting system, drain arrangement and electrical connection correctly. If replacement is the better option, we remove the failed unit, install a compatible disposal and test the sink and drain connections before returning the kitchen to normal use.

Why Is Your Garbage Disposal Leaking?

The location of the water usually tells us where to start. Water around the top of the disposal may come from the sink flange or mounting seal. A leak at the side can involve the dishwasher inlet or discharge connection. Water from the bottom of the housing is more likely to indicate an internal failure that usually makes replacement the better option.

Because sink cabinets can hide water for some time, even a small disposal leak deserves attention. Moisture can swell cabinet materials, damage stored items and create an environment where odors or microbial growth develop.

Why Choose Arco Home Services for Garbage Disposal Repair?

We have served Northeast Ohio homes since 1955, and our licensed plumbers look at the whole sink assembly rather than treating the disposal as an isolated appliance. That means we can distinguish a disposal failure from a clogged branch drain, leaking faucet connection or damaged sink plumbing and recommend the service that actually solves the problem.

You receive upfront pricing before approved work begins, clear guidance on repair versus replacement and work backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee. If the sink problem connects to faucet repair, drain service or other kitchen plumbing, we can handle that work as part of the same home services team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a garbage disposal actually have sharp blades?

Most disposals use rotating impellers and a grinding ring rather than knife-like blades. The chamber can still cause serious injury, so hands should never be placed inside it.

Do ice cubes or lemon peels sharpen a garbage disposal?

They do not sharpen it. Small amounts may help move residue or freshen odor, but they do not repair worn components and large pieces can contribute to jams.

Can I pour grease through the disposal if I run hot water?

No. Grease can cool and coat the disposal and drain piping, contributing to clogs farther down the line even when the unit grinds food normally.

Are coffee grounds and eggshells safe for a garbage disposal?

They are better kept out. Fine grounds and membrane-like food waste can collect in the drain and contribute to restrictions instead of washing away cleanly.

Does a dishwasher need a garbage disposal to drain?

No. Dishwashers can be connected to a properly configured drain without a disposal. The exact setup depends on the sink plumbing and local installation requirements.

Can a garbage disposal be used in a home with a septic system?

It can in some homes, but additional food solids increase the load on the septic system. Homeowners should consider the septic system design, maintenance and manufacturer guidance.

Your home’s hero is standing by to restore your comfort, protect your home, and get your water flowing again — the right way.

We originally called Acro for one issue but ended up with getting our very out dated breaker boxes replaced which was definitely needed. Shavine M. and Evan S. were both our electric technicians for our full job. Shavine M. was the first technicians on site and was very prompt. The gentlemen let us know before hand the amount of time the power was going to be out and we gave them the space to work. After the work was completed, Shavine gave a walk through of the work completed today and a explaination of the next steps after. We are very happy with the work completed and Shavine and Evan were a pleasure to have as technicians on the job.
