Summer weather – we aren’t immune to the discomfort of a scalding hot summer day. We are creatures of balance, and it’s important to know how to cool yourself down when your body temperature is rising.
If you are lucky enough to have an air conditioner, you may think that you’re already in the clear. You can just crank up the AC and stay cool that way! But when you are facing a full week of blistering sun and high humidity, you’ll be glad to know these handy tricks that won’t cost you a dime.
If you’re like us, crawling into bed is the most important time to stay cool. No one wants to be all sweaty and sticky while climbing between the sheets. We’ll start with some tips for keeping cool in the sack.
- Stuff your sheets into a plastic bag and stick them in the freezer! It sounds a little ridiculous – but think about the cold, crisp feeling those sheets will have after you pull them out of the icebox and put them back on the bed. Granted, they’ll go back to room temperature eventually, but not before you get the chance to sprawl out and feel that icy sensation on your soft sheets.
- Try freezing a hot water bottle and placing it beneath the covers at the foot of your bed. This is an age-old method that can be used in the winter too, but you’d be using hot water to keep warm instead of frozen water to keep cool.
- Lose some layers! If you sleep with pajamas, strip down and try just sleeping with your underwear, or better yet, go all natural and sleep in the nude! There is some debate about whether or not sleeping naked actually helps or hinders you in the quest to stay cool at night – but really, we think personal preference is what’s most important. Go with what’s most comfortable!
- This one is kind of a given: use fans! You’d be surprised at how big a difference a box fan can actually make, especially if you can figure out how to make the air-flow work for you. Experiment with placing your box fan near different windows, or use multiple fans (if you have them) to create a good mixture of air moving through your home.
- Unplug all of your appliances! Okay, maybe not ALL of your appliances, but just the ones you don’t need – which should be most of them, especially at night. While it may be a minuscule amount, anything plugged into an outlet will draw power, and any electronic device will also generate some heat. Unplugging them isn’t going to make a huge difference, but it’s a good habit to get into – especially if you want to be more energy conscious.
There are countless tips and tricks out there to keep cool… The ones discussed here are just a few we like the most. At the end of the day, the most effective method is going to be installing an air conditioning unit. Arco Comfort Air can help with that! If you aren’t sure where to start, give us a call today! We’ll be happy to guide you through the process.

Jessie came out today to service our heating system. He was on time and very personable. We have had great experiences with ARCO and Jessie in the past. He got right to work and checked over the system and found that the igniter looked a bit “Iiffy” We had it replaced. Very reasonable. Very Happy with ARCO and will schedule our AC tuneup in the spring..

The technician was incredibly thorough and detailed with his work inspecting the electrical in our home. He clearly explained what he was going to do and all that it would entail. When he was finished he went over anything that needed to be done and why, and then offered reasonable quotes in different price points so it wasn’t overwhelming.
