When Should You Replace Your Heating System Instead of Repairing It?

Three faults effectively end a heating system. A cracked heat exchanger in a furnace is a combustion safety problem, so the unit gets condemned rather than patched. A cracked or internally leaking boiler section is the same story. A compressor failure on an out-of-warranty heat pump usually costs more than the remaining life of the system is worth.

Everything else is a judgement call, and age drives it. A heating repair at eight years old is money well spent. The identical repair on a twenty year old unit buys you one component in a system where the next failure is already queuing up behind it. Watch for these before the system quits entirely:

• Rooms that were comfortable five years ago and are not now, with nothing about the house having changed
• Longer and longer run times to hold the same thermostat setting
• Repeated ignition, burner or lockout faults, always on the coldest nights

Why Your Replacement Should Not Match the Size of the Old One

The most common mistake in a heating replacement is ordering the same capacity that came out. That figure was often set decades ago on a rule of thumb rather than a calculation, and in a lot of Northeast Ohio homes it was wrong when it was installed.

Sizing matters more here than in milder climates, because the heating season is long and the equipment runs for months at a time. An undersized furnace cannot hold the house through the coldest stretch of the year, which is the only time it truly counts. An oversized one causes more trouble day to day: it satisfies the thermostat in short bursts, short cycles all season, burns out its ignition components early, and never runs long enough to push heat to the far end of the house, so the back bedroom stays cold while the thermostat in the hallway insists everything is fine.
