Arco Comfort Air is host to AC Beachwood experts who are ready and willing to tell you everything you need to know about home cooling. One of the questions we see popping up more and more revolve around air conditioner refrigerant. Refrigerants are liquid agents designed to cool and dehumidify indoor air. Simply put, it’s what makes air conditioning in your home possible. It’s arguably the most important factor in keeping your home nice and cool. However, our AC Beachwood experts are here to tell you about the truth about air conditioner refrigerants. While they can be undeniably helpful in keeping your home cool, refrigerants can also be harmful to the environment.
Here’s a few things you should know before you consider a refrigerant purchase:
R-22 is Bad News: In recent years, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have prohibited HVAC companies from installing an AC with a refrigerant known as R-22. The major problem with R-22 is that it contains ozone-depleting chlorine, and is considered a greenhouse gas that can speed up the process
of global warming. While an older AC may be equipped with R-22, it’s best to upgrade to a new AC that won’t contain any environmentally damaging substances.
Consider R-410A: Since HVAC companies are banned from installing an AC with R-22, a refrigerant known as R-410A is taking its place. R-410A is considered to be the future of air conditioning refrigerant due to its environmentally-friendly makeup. A new AC with R-410A is guaranteed to improve air quality and deliver cool air with higher efficiency. If you’re stuck with an AC designed to only handle R-22 refrigerant, then contact one of our many AC Beachwood experts on how to get R-410A in your AC.
Other refrigerants to consider are R-134A and R-407C.
Perform a Maintenance Check: Regardless of your choice in AC, it’s important to perform a maintenance check on your AC to see if it’s running low on refrigerant. Refrigerant can be purchased online or at
your local store. An AC maintenance check will also let you know if there are any problems with your AC that need attention. A maintenance check can reveal all sort of problems with your AC, whether it be dirty filters or faulty internal components. While you can do a maintenance check on your own time, it’s best to have it done by a professional.
